Why was Tool cancelled?
Following postponement due to the spread of COVID-19, the group has now outright canceled the tour so that fans can get full refunds for their tickets. “In our opinion, tying up our fans' money for months, if not a full year, is unfair,” the band wrote in a statement.
Why did Tool go on hiatus?
October 1996 saw the release of Ænima which eventually beat Tool's debut in sales, and was certified triple platinum by the RIAA in 2003. The third single from the album, "Ænema", won the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1998. Following legal battles with their label, the band went on hiatus.

Tool have announced a new slate of tour dates for early 2024, expanding on the North American leg that's currently underway. They'll pick up again in Baltimore in January, wrapping up in Las Vegas a few weeks later.
